The Pupillary Dilation Response: A Tool for Assessing Sensory Performance in Humans

This tool demonstrates a correlation between the magnitude of a person’s involuntary pupil dilation and their hearing. 

 

A subject’s pupil size increases when they hear a sound, and the magnitude of the pupil increase is proportional to the intensity of the sound.  The Pupillary Dilation Response tool can use this correlation to test hearing in patients who are unable to respond intentionally (i.e., raise their hand) to a traditional hearing test. Such patients may include those receiving ototoxic anticancer drugs, or children who are too young to speak, give reliable answers or follow instructions.
